  • What is the independent variable?
    The type of cell used
  • What is the dependent variable?
  • It is the presence or absence of DNA
  • What variables did you control?
  • Alcohol, Wheat germ and the amount of times I stirred.
  • Give two ways you could improve the practical.
  • Use a different plant or a different detergent

Male:
Prostate Glands: The prostate produces fluid (prostatic fluid), which is secreted at the time of ejaculation.

Vas Deferens: To transport sperm from the epydidymis in anticipation of ejaculation

Epididymis: It stores the sperm and secretes it to the duct in ejaculation.

Testicle: Either of the two oval organs that produce sperm in men and other male mammals, enclosed in the scrotum behind the penis.

Urethra: The duct by which urine is conveyed out of the body from the bladder, and which in male vertebrates also conveys semen.

Female:

Ovary: A female reproductive organ in which ova or eggs are produced, present in humans and other vertebrates as a pair.

Fallopian tube: Either of a pair of tubes along which eggs travel from the ovaries to the uterus.

Uterus: The organ in the lower body of a woman or female mammal where offspring are conceived and in which they gestate before birth; the womb.

Cervix: The narrow necklike passage forming the lower end of the uterus.

Interphase: Cells may appear inactive during this stage, but they are quite the opposite. This is the longest period of the complete cell cycle during which DNA replicates, the centrioles divide, and proteins are actively produced. For a complete description of the events during Interphase, read about the Cell Cycle.

Prophase: During this first mitotic stage, the nucleolus fades and chromatin (replicated DNA and associated proteins) condenses into chromosomes. Each replicated chromosome comprises two chromatids, both with the same genetic information. Microtubules of the cytoskeleton, responsible for cell shape, motility and attachment to other cells during interphase, disassemble. And the building blocks of these microtubules are used to grow the mitotic spindle from the region of the centrosomes.

Prometaphase: In this stage the nuclear envelope breaks down so there is no longer a recognizable nucleus. Some mitotic spindle fibers elongate from the centrosomes and attach to kinetochores, protein bundles at the centromere region on the chromosomes where sister chromatids are joined. Other spindle fibers elongate but instead of attaching to chromosomes, overlap each other at the cell center.

Metaphase: Tension applied by the spindle fibers aligns all chromosomes in one plane at the center of the cell.

Anaphase: Spindle fibers shorten, the kinetochores separate, and the chromatids (daughter chromosomes) are pulled apart and begin moving to the cell poles.

Telophase: The daughter chromosomes arrive at the poles and the spindle fibers that have pulled them apart disappear.

Cytokinesis: The spindle fibers not attached to chromosomes begin breaking down until only that portion of overlap is left. It is in this region that a contractile ring cleaves the cell into two daughter cells. Microtubules then reorganize into a new cytoskeleton for the return to interphase.

Challenge Accepted:
Because the DNA in people are in different order compared to everyone else.

Mitosis Follow-up:

  1. What do the terms diploid & haploid mean?
  2. Why do the chromosomes need to double before the cell divides?
  3. How many chromosomes does a human cell contain?
  4. How many chromosomes does a dog cell contain?
  5. What could happen to the cell if the chromosomes do not separate correctly?

Answers:

1. Diploid: It is a cell that contains two sets of Chromosomes

Haploid: It is a cell that contains one complete set of Chromosomes

2. If the chromosomes did not duplicate, the new cells would not have the correct amount of genetic information to function.

3. 46

4. 78

5. It could cause Down Syndrome
